Pascal DegutProduct & web applications Book a call

The product worth building, actually built.

Fractional product manager and freelance developer based in Lyon, France. I scope what needs to be built, build it, and ship it to production. One person from the first call to handover, working in English with teams across Europe.

Decide what to build. Then build it.

Most projects fail before the first line of code, on a scope nobody dared to write down. I work on both halves of that problem, together or separately.

BRIEF PRIORITISED BACKLOG Measurable success criteria, written trade-offs
01Decide what to build

Fractional product management

The product manager you can't yet justify hiring full time. I turn a vague need into an executable scope, then hold the delivery rhythm through to production, with the explicit goal that your team no longer needs me at the end.

02Build it and ship it

Web applications and websites

An internal tool that saves your team hours, a prototype to put in front of real users, an online store, or a site that states your offer clearly. I design it, build it, ship it, and hand you the keys.

  • Shopify stores

Background

Eight years shipping, not pitching.

I started out building online stores for small businesses. Today I lead products in-house at a B2B SaaS company and build applications as a freelancer. The two jobs feed each other: I know what a sloppy scope costs, because I'm the one who writes the code afterwards.

Three commitments

What you can hold me to.

Not values on a page: three commitments written into the quote, verifiable during the engagement, and enforceable at the end.

The trade-offs are written down, and they cut

A scope document listing everything you will do is worthless. Mine lists what you will not do, and why: which feature moves to v2, which edge case stays manual, which request costs more than it will ever return. That document is what stops the roadmap being rewritten every month.

The deadline is in the quote, not in an estimate

A written scope within 48 hours of the call, a marketing site live in one to three weeks, a demo at the end of every one-to-two-week cycle. If I slip, you see it at the next cycle rather than at delivery, and you can stop there, with no penalty.

On a store, we talk conversion, not mockups

A checkout flow is judged on three numbers: add-to-cart rate, checkout abandonment, average order value. We measure them before, decide changes on that basis, and read them again after. A redesign that moves none of the three has produced nothing, however good it looks.

Who I work with

Three contexts, one blocking point.

I don't work with everyone. These three situations are where I add the most, because I have lived both sides of them: the one who sets the scope and the one who writes the code.

SMEs · 10 to 200 people

A business process still running on spreadsheets and email

You know exactly where it hurts, nobody has time to write it down, and the agency quotes you have received so far price a scope that was never defined. We start by writing that scope, not by building.

SaaS companies and startups

A solid engineering team, a roadmap rewritten every month

You can't yet justify a full-time product manager, and what's missing isn't more specs: it's someone to make the calls, hold them over time, and leave the team self-sufficient.

Online retail and brands

A store that sells, but loses people on the way

Or a site rented from a platform you want to leave without losing your search rankings. Success is measured on conversion and on owning your own site, not on another aesthetic refresh.

What I am not the right person for Engagements needing more than six months of continuous development, purely cosmetic redesigns with no business stake, and time-and-materials work with no written scope. I say so during the discovery call, not after taking a deposit.
Shopify

Where it started, and still every week.

Shopify is where I learned the trade, and it's still a large part of my work: more than twenty-five stores built or taken over, from a first launch to a full migration off PrestaShop. A store is judged on three numbers (add-to-cart rate, checkout abandonment, average order value), not on the mockup.

Pascal set up my store in record time. When I struggled to understand how to update it, he took the time to record a video and showed me in a few minutes how to get unstuck.

Valentin Gentil

Pascal is very serious, efficient and professional. I have trusted him with building several of my stores and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended!

How it runs

Write the product before coding it.

The first half of the engagement produces documents, not screens, and you can stop at the end of it.

Phase 1 Decide (you can stop here)

01

Discovery call

15 to 45 minutes, free. You leave with a written summary and a go / no-go, including “an off-the-shelf tool would do better” when that's the honest answer.

02

Written specification

Screens, data model, journeys, edge cases, and what will not be built.

03

Figma prototype

A clickable journey with every state planned. The source file is yours.

Phase 2 Build and hand over

04

Backlog on Linear

Epics and tickets with acceptance criteria, readable by you and your team at any time.

05

Delivery in cycles

One to two weeks each, with a deployed preview at the end. You redirect as you go.

06

Production and handover

Your infrastructure, your repository, written docs and a recorded walkthrough.

Pricing

Every project is quoted, after a first call.

No price list: the scope decides the price, and we write the scope together. Here is how it goes from your first message to a quote you can hold me to.

A 15-minute call

Context, deadline, budget. If I'm not the right person, I say so on that call and point you to someone better placed.

A written proposal within 48 hours

What will be built, what will not, the deadline and the price, in writing, in English. You compare it with other quotes on the same basis.

No commitment until you sign

The call and the proposal are free. Invoices are in euros, with no VAT charged under the French franchise en base scheme.

FAQ

Before we start.

Do you work in English?

Yes. Calls, written scopes, specifications, documentation and code comments can all be in English. Day-to-day I work in both languages: French with clients in France, English with teams elsewhere in Europe. Client reviews on this page are translated because the originals are French.

Where are you, and how do we work together?

Lyon, France, Central European Time. Most engagements are fully remote, with a video call at the end of each cycle and a board you can read at any time. On-site work is possible in Lyon and, case by case, elsewhere with a travel surcharge.

Who owns the code?

You do. The code lands in your own repository from day one, in a standard stack any developer can pick up. Source files, documentation and access are handed over at the end, along with a recorded walkthrough. There is no mandatory maintenance contract: if you come back, it's because you want to.

Do you use AI to produce deliverables?

Yes, daily, and I don't hide it: that is what makes it possible to ship in weeks what used to take months. What it does not change: I review, I test, and I stand behind every line delivered. You receive readable, documented code on your own repository.

How do invoicing and VAT work?

Invoices are issued in euros from France, payable by bank transfer. I operate under the French franchise en base de TVA scheme, so no VAT is charged on my invoices, and none is reclaimable. The amount on the quote is the amount you pay.

What does the first call cover?

Fifteen minutes on context, deadline and budget. If the subject isn't right for me, I say so on that call and point you to someone better placed. It's more profitable for both of us than a quote written to be polite.

Shall we talk?

Fifteen minutes to understand your situation. The call is free, and you leave with an opinion whether or not we end up working together.
